Behavior Mentor Support
In preparation for the development of my Problem of Practice, it was essential to complete a holistic needs assessment on Benson Middle School. This assessment and experience in my internship, my initial focus on the Problem of Practices centered around behavioral management. Through assignments such as a Day in the Life and strategic shadowing, I determined that the need for behavior interventions throughout Benson Middle School was needed. While my focus for the implementation of my Behavior Mentor System was on the 7th-grade level, it would later be implemented school-wide.
The Behavior Mentor Plan offered both students and teachers additional support in the classroom with the focus of increasing instructional time and minimizing distractions. Teachers and students received coaching on strategies to help make them successful in their roles. Restorative Practices and Professional Development was used to help students and teachers develop self-efficacy and reduce conflicts, anxiety, and frustration.
Although my Problem of Practice timeline was affected by the Coronavirus pandemic, a decrease in behavior occurred, and an increase in student self-management skills was expressed.
